Big Art Show

Sat., Feb. 3, 6pm. $5. With Sw!ms, Sisters 3, Except After Sea, Mossyrock, Captain Werewolf + Fartpants vs. Defibrillator. Art Making Machine Studios, 3000 N. Hope St. www.bigartshow.com

In case you missed the memo, Philly’s independent art scene is blowing up like a high desert biker meth lab. The recent ICA Philadelphia year-opening extravaganza set the bar pretty high for the art party crowd, but this weekend’s Big Art Show (BAS) rolls in fully strapped and utterly unfazed.

Doubling as the christening for the upstart Art Making Machine Studios, BAS features works from roughly 40 artists spanning the media spectrum, as well as performances by sixcount ’em, sixbands. This is as close to a slam dunk as you’re gonna find this week.

Five bucks gets you in the door to gaze at scads of artwork in a brand-spanking-new warehouse studio as you rock out to the likes of the Sw!ms and Mossyrock.

Keep in mind the gallery is situated in beautiful downtown Kensington (bonus adventure travel points!), and there’ll be kegs of PBR on hand for swilling purposes.

We must continue to respect and enliven the local arts scene, and the Big Art Show offers new music and new artists in a new space. (Joshua Valocchi)
