“Versatility” is a term bandied about too frequently in music reviews. When it comes to describing guitarists, the V-word is almost always a cop-out.
Almost.
Will Bernard plays the exception to that rule. Having shared the stage with Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin and Wood and Trey Anastasio, Bernard’s more than paid his groove and jam-band union dues.
But his straight-up jazz work with his trio and his current touring band, as well as his work alongside Lonnie Liston Smith and Idris Muhammad, give credence to his—yup—versatility.
