Tom Spiker's Mobile Pleasure Lounge

Sat., July 31, 9pm. $10. With Sonic Liberation Front (CD release party). Tritone, 1508 South St. 215.545.0475. http://www.tritonebar.com

When Angela Lansbury released Positive Moves, a 1994 exercise video aimed at the senior set, chances are she had no visions of an Electric Miles-inspired score someday being devised to complement her regimen of squats and scissor leg lifts.

Enter Mobile Pleasure Lounge, a constantly revolving cast of musicians led by local guitarist Tom Spiker.

As the opening act for Sonic Liberation Front's CD release party at Tritone on Saturday, Spiker has gathered a gang of four, including former Fathead keyboardist Jeremy Dyen and Jason Fraticelli of Grandfather Ridiculous on upright bass, to improvise a score to a cavalcade of snippets of cult classics, sci-fi flicks and, of course, the aforementioned Geritol Jazzercise.

Video images are projected onto a screen behind the band as the musicians follow the action through on the stage's monitors, allowing the scenes to guide the ebb and flow of their decidedly Bitches Brew-esque noodlings.

Although Spiker readily admits that Saturday's gig isn't as edgy or as dark as the standard MPL project, can you imagine anything more disturbing than Angela Lansbury discussing menopause from a bubbling hot tub? This should be enough to strike fear in the hearts of the bravest of men. Consider yourself warned. (Joshua Valocchi)
