Anyone who’s watched even a handful of CSI episodes knows eyewitness accounts of the same incident can paint seriously contrasting pictures of the truth.

Long before Anthony Zuiker revealed such elementary premises to the Nielsen nation, however, Japanese director Akira Kurosawa deconstructed the notion of reliable witnesses in his 1950 masterpiece Rashômon.

Mirroring the concepts featured in Rashômon, local performance arts collective Perpetual Mvmt< >Snd presents The Rashomon Effect, a living music video of sorts that tracks a single abstraction through interpretive dance and sound from four perspectives.

Each point of view is symbolized by a single dancer responding to sounds provided by an accompanying musician. The widely varying results force the audience to reflect upon the subjectivity of memory, perception and communication, and the whole shebang goes far beyond thought-provoking, touching upon the sublimely surreal.

Not for the faint of heart, The Rashomon Effect is better suited to those who found Pulp Fiction far too definitive and saw Memento as cowtowing to commonality. (Joshua Valocchi)
