ROCK 'N' ROLL

Galactic

Longtime darlings of the New Orleans funk scene Galactic tapped producer extraordinaire Dan the Automator to put his fingers to the buttons on their latest effort, Ruckus. The resulting product is a piece of pure funk/trip-hop bliss, which should have been expected from this dream pairing.

Coming off his stints with Handsome Boy Modeling School and Lovage, Dan's held on as top dog in the hip-hop and DJ production realm and has even lent his golden touch to such eclectic artists as Medeski Martin and Wood and Air.

Lest his heavy-handed approach to the Gorillaz project and his masterful work on Deltron 3030 went unnoticed (unlikely), Dan left his mark all over Ruckus like a Brooklyn graf artist on an abandoned Q-train car.

Galactic has a well-earned reputation for putting on marathon sets that just drip with booty-shaking funk, but they never seemed to be able to capture that magic on studio releases.

Well, the times, they are a-changin', and now the tables are turned. It'll be interesting to see if Galactic can project the spirit of the Automator onstage at the Factory. (Joshua Valocchi)
