Canary Promotion and Design Five-Year Anniversary Bash and 2006 Fringe Preview

Sat., Aug. 5, 8pm. $7. Cinema, 3925 Walnut St. 215.242.6393

Just like garish Christmas displays in the mall, Fringe preview events mark the unofficial beginning of a new season—and seem to come earlier every year.

This year’s proverbial tree will be lit by the good folks at Canary Promotion and Design as they celebrate their fifth anniversary with a bash featuring sneak peeks of several of this year’s Fringe productions.

Considering Fringe is the de facto holiday season for the Philly arts community, it’s only fitting that the ghosts of Christmas present (and future, presumably) will be ushered in by James Sugg of Pig Iron Theater renown, Kate Watson-Wallace and Reactionaries.

Local rockers Milton and the Devils Party will hook up with Jersey-based Hero Pattern and go a-caroling throughout the evening, providing shoppers and browsers alike with warm musical interludes as stages switch and troupes flip.

The star atop this tannenbaum is a screening of The Broken Hipsters, an indie rock opera featured in 2004’s Fringe, thus neatly rounding out the trifecta with a nod to the ghosts of Fringes past.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, all proceeds generated by Saturday’s shindig will be donated directly to the artists. So don’t be a Scrooge about it, eh? (Joshua Valocchi)
