SOUL

Family Reunion Night

Thurs., Dec. 30, 9pm. $5. Silk City, Fifth and Spring Garden sts. 215.592.8838. www.silkcitylounge.com

I swear to God, those no-good lushes behind that Modern Drunkard rag will use any excuse to throw a hooch party. And God, how we love 'em for it. Thursday night--that's right, New-Year's-Eve Eve--Silk City will be drenched in a boozy haze of soul, funk and blues, and you'd better damn well believe it's gonna be a stone groove, man.

DJs Steve and Lex of Family Reunion and Soul Sundays fame will set the tone for the evening, dropping wax to shake that ass to before the evening's live acts--Soulamite and the Sideshow Prophets--tear the roof off the sucka.

Soulamite's set of note-perfect renditions of soul and funk classics may be rivaled in pure entertainment value by only the Sideshow Prophets' Blues Brothers Extravaganza.

To put the two on the same bill borders on lunacy, but that's nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to the gang at MDM. But if this lineup results in the Prophets and Soulamite's Aretha-esque PJ Brown performing "Think" together--well, that would be simply sublime.

Under the guise of creating an illusion of a classy affair, semiformal dress is suggested. In reality, though, the only dress code likely to be enforced at this gig is that you show up wearing your drinkin' shoes. (Joshua Valocchi)
