Hip-Hop Summit National Town Hall Meeting

Wed., July 12, 5pm. Free. University of Pennsylvania, Irvine Auditorium, 3401 Spruce St. www.hsan.org

In the closing seconds of “If,” a politically charged hip-hop ditty by Maroons, Lateef the Truth Speaker muses, “How can we better use hip-hop as a tool?” Def Jam founder and overall positive rabblerouser Russell Simmons has been struggling with that question for years now.

In an effort to unearth some answers, Simmons formed the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network in 2001. Espousing the precept that hip-hop is a culturally relevant art form that can act as an agent for positive social change, Simmons has mobilized a revolving cast of musicians, activists and politicians to conduct town-hall-style meetings throughout the land.

The topics of discussion center on political empowerment and social responsibility from the urban youth perspective. This week Simmons and co. roll through Philly with Jaguar Wright, Musiq and Juelz Santana in tow.

Considering the general state of politics today, the time to act is now. Get involved, get registered and get jiggy. (Joshua Valocchi)
