Unaggressive and inoffensive, Phoenix are like the girl you always wanted to bring home to mom. Unfortunately she’s not the same girl you’d like to take home after last call.
Phoenix released two albums of pitch-perfect soft pop in their native France. Their latest offering It’s Never Been Like That eschews a great deal of the Steely Dan and Hall & Oates influences evident in their earlier work, but the end result is still little more than Strokes-lite.
Whereas the old Phoenix would blanch at the mere prospect of oral sex, the new, edgier Phoenix may voyage below the equator—but don’t expect her to swallow. (Joshua Valocchi)
