Ladies Love Hip-Hop

Thurs., Aug. 26, 10pm-2am. $5. La Tazza 108, 108 Chestnut St. 215.922.7322

Following in the footsteps of MC Lyte and Bahamadia, Jean Grae is the latest entry on a too-short list of women shoving it to the boys' club that is hip-hop. In fact, it was Black Thought's intro of Grae at a Roots show last year that gave rise to the name of Thursday's party at La Tazza.

"The ladies love hip-hop," spake Mr. Thought. Damn right they do--and DJs Ultraviolet and Sesi are out to prove it.

The "shejays" will be pullin' black plates out of their many crates, rocking Old City's hip-hop haven of the now with joints from the likes of Nas, Madlib and Little Brother. From the old school to the new school, UV and Sesi grace the decks with the type of underground jams that deserve to be heard worldwide, were it not for the fact that such exposure might damage their street cred (see: Jurassic 5).

True beat diggers and scene ambassadors, these ladies not only know their hip-hop, but they also love it--and it shows. (Joshua Valocchi)
