Montreal’s Malajube (pronounced Mal-a-zhoob) present fairly evident nods to the Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse throughout Trompe L’oeil alongside conjured images of Franz Ferdinand and Broken Social Scene.
Not uncommon.
The weird thing is that they capture slivers of sound without sounding even remotely derivative. Instead, Malajube’s tunes resonate audacious exuberance and unfettered creativity.
Explosive segues propel songs through papier-mache-lined genres with such agility that their all-French lyrics (yup) become a complete nonissue. (Joshua Valocchi)
