The dirty old man is finally being recognized in the form of a celebration.

While this statement may arouse the, um, curiosity of several members of our readership's sky-high pedophile segment, we're actually talking about the dirty old man himself, Charles Bukowski, who'll be fêted in Philadelphia this week in a festival called "Charles Bukowski: Sex, Drink and Classical Music." (For more info on the fest, go to www.shermanarts.org).

The centerpiece of the weeklong fest is Bukowski: Born Into This, a documentary screened on three separate occasions (no excuses, slackers) that perfectly captures "Hank" Bukowski in the raw. Tom Waits' reading in the film of Hank's poetry is worth the price of admission alone.

Although many will claim there's little to no use in celebrating the life and times of an alcoholic misanthrope like Bukowski, the man's writing truly speaks for itself. I mean, seriously, folks-;I met Billy Corgan backstage at Lollapalooza '94 and that sour experience alone taught me the importance of separating the art from the artist.

Was Bukowski a complete bastard? You better believe it. Does his body of work overshadow his shortcomings of human being standards? Enough to warrant an entire festival, bitches. Believe it. (Joshua Valocchi)
