Just like Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes, Vienna Teng's Warm Strangers is one of those discs that no self-respecting straight male would ever cop to owning.

But when it comes time to woo that special lady with a home-cooked meal and a bottle of Chilean Merlot, this disc stands as the essential water to add to the evening's sexy mix.

From the aching beauty of the disc's opener, "Feather Moon," to the crystalline pop of "Hope on Fire" and "Shasta," Strangers is striking in every aspect, especially considering that just two years ago, Teng was drudging through her days as a coder for Cisco Systems when she walked away to concentrate on her music full-time.

In the contemplative "Mission Street," a captivating homage to her hometown of San Francisco, Teng muses, "It seems that I've been wrong more than I've been right."

On behalf of all the horny wannabe-sensitive guys out there, I'd like to officially thank Ms. Teng for failing to allow that sentiment to guide her career choices. (Joshua Valocchi)
