SINGER/SONGWRITER
Rachael Yamagata
Wed., June 16, 8:30pm. $10. Tin Angel, 20 S. Second St. 215.928.0770. www.tinangel.com
Coming off like a breathier Norah Jones--and just as cute--Rachael Yamagata has been soaking up a great deal of buzz on the singer/ songwriter circuit since the late '03 release of her self-titled EP.
After spending the better part of the past year opening for the likes of David Gray, Liz Phair and Gomez, Yamagata hits up the Tin Angel fresh off of playing in front of thousands at this year's Bonnaroo festival.
More Fiona Apple than Sarah McLachlan, Yamagata exhibits a pleasant balance between sensitivity and snarl that's sorely lacking among too many of her one-dimensional contemporaries.
The Bonnaroo slot all but guarantees Yamagata a free pass on the fast track to mainstream recognition, which is why Wednesday's gig within the Angel's intimate confines may be your last chance to catch this rising star in a small setting. (Joshua Valocchi)
