Hip-hop crew Electric City are like the mailmen of the Philadelphia music scene. Going way back to last century, they’ve hosted the Hip-Hop Lives event on a monthly basis regardless of the elements. (I trudged uphill through 2 feet of snow to hit up one of their jawns back in 2000.)

These guys won’t let anything stop them from delivering intelligent, socially conscious hip-hop.

This week Mighty FlipSide and DJ Skipmode prove that not even thunderbolts hurled by a hip-hop-hating almighty God can hinder their mission as they move Hip-Hop Lives from the burned-down Five Spot to the Pontiac Grille.

A broken hand might keep Skipmode off the decks but special guests Anwa—featuring Chuck Treece, Jake Morelli and Tony Catastrophe—should provide ample distraction before Reef the Lost Cauze tears the roof off the sucka.

Hip-Hop Lives, indeed—but just like the mailman, these guys shouldn’t be left alone with your mother. (Joshua Valocchi)
