When British novelist George Meredith opined “perfect simplicity is unconsciously audacious,” he could very well have been describing the music of the Wood Brothers—if he had made such musings 150 years later than he actually did.

The Brothers Wood, with Chris’ upright bass mastery underpinning Oliver’s bluesy fingerpicking, keep things on the simply sublime tip.

Owing just as much to Robert Johnson as to Woody Guthrie, the Woods complement one another’s style in a fashion that leaves no doubt as to their blood relation. Their vocal melodies mesh in haunting simpatico as they traipse through folk and roots numbers with a sort of ambling precision.

Yeah, they keep it simple—but not stupid. (J.V.)
