Yet another outfit that can be lumped into the Canadian invasion referenced in these very pages last week, the Dears have been nosing the grind since the turn of the millennium but are just now receiving their due.
Sounding like Morrissey fronting the Arcade Fire with a touch of Bowie to boot, the Dears’ 2006 release Gang of Losers plays heavily on the ostracized loser theme, but with surprisingly hook-heavy results.
Since Moz announced his boycott of touring Canada due to the country’s seal-clubbing tendencies, the Dears stand to inherit a slew of Smiths-crazed Canucks by default.
In the seal-loving U.S. of A., however, they’re just more melodic minstrels of Montreal. (Joshua Valocchi)
