The Capitol Years on Last Call With Carson Daly

Wed., Sept. 8-Sun., Sept. 12, 1:30am. NBC10.

Only eight months into 2004 and it's already been a banner year for this local quartet. First came the honor of being hand-picked to open for the first Pixies show in 12 years, followed recently by an invite to play as the house band for a week on Last Call With Carson Daly.

Not only did Shai Halperin and co. have the distinct privilege of sharing a stage with the adorably malleable Daly, but the boys found themselves lucky enough to be taping the episodes against the backdrop of the Republican National Convention for shows that'll air next week.

That's right: As protests raged outside, our local rock icons strutted their stuff, taking Carson to commercial breaks and providing soundtracks for guests' entrances.

It still remains to be seen whether band members used the gig as a political platform, sporting T-shirts emblazoned with politically charged statements, or engaged in some witty banter à la Conan and Max Weinberg.

Most important, we'll be watching to see what they chose to play when the week's first scheduled guest, the inimitable Don King, emerges from behind the curtains--perhaps a rousing rendition of Jay and the Americans' classic "Only in America"?

Tune in, turn on, find out. (Joshua Valocchi)
