The highest point on the starpower index for this weekend's Hoodstock festival is Sadat X, and with good reason. Sadat became the de facto ringleader of hip-hop trailblazers Brand Nubian when founding MC Grand Puba took off for an unscheduled seven-year holiday in 1991.
Sadat held his own, leading the remaining members through 1993's In God We Trust and '94's Everything Is Everything. While neither album lived up to the sheer magnificence of the Puba-led debut One for All, it can't be said that Sadat X shied away from the opportunity to stick it to most of the sucka MCs who were vying for the title of "the next Puba."
Sadat's presence at Hoodstock should not, however, overshadow that of local hero Kenneth Masters, aka K-Mass. Masters has been a major player in Philly's hip-hop underground for years, and his latest EP, Independent as Fuck!, calls to mind lyrical leviathans like Del tha Funky Homosapien and the whole Hieroglyphics crew. With frequent K-Mass collaborators DJ Cramski and Reef the Lost Cauze on the bill as well, nothing is off-limits. Though there are more than 30 acts, there's no set schedule, so keep your eyes, your ears and your mind open. (Joshua Valocchi)
