Jason Moran has taken giant steps to resuscitate the notion of individuality among jazz pianists.
Critics are forever griping about the lack of new styles among modern players. Monk had a distinct sound. Art Tatum's technique was unmistakable. But not since Herbie Hancock has any young lion cultivated a decidedly unique sound and found some measure of success in doing so.
After hijacking the attention of Blue Note execs with his chops on several Greg Osby releases, Jason Moran stormed forward, releasing five albums in as many years, each more daring than its predecessor.
When his Bandwagon trio rolls into town Friday, expect to be barraged with variety. Just as Moran mixes equal parts tonality and dissonance in his playing, the dichotomy spills over to the trio's set lists. Just as comfortable playing Ravel as they are Afrika Bambaataa, the Bandwagon promises to sound exactly like nothing you've ever heard before. (Joshua Valocchi)
