JAZZ
Russo/Benevento Duo
Sat., May 15, 9pm. $10. With Calvin Weston/Brian Marsella Duo. Tritone, 1508 South St. 215.545.0475. www.tritonebar.com
Simon and Garfunkel, Jan and Dean, Captain and Tennille. 'Twas a time when duos abounded in the music world.
Nowadays, though, the only pair we ever hear about is Nick and Jessica, and frankly, who gives a damn? Though Saturday's evening of duos at Tritone won't necessarily fill the void left in our city's duo scene by the breakup of Hall and Oates, it does promise to provide a raucous evening of fatback drums, searing organ licks and eerie musical telepathy.
Local drummer Calvin Weston pairs up with Caveman keyboardist Brian Marsella to serve up an appetizer of free-jazz-leaning jams before Joe Russo and Marco Benevento storm the stage with their ferociously tasty recipe of downright sick grooves.
Having first played together in a middle school jazz band, organist Marco Benevento and kit maestro Joe Russo share an almost tangible onstage clairvoyance that allows them to segue effortlessly through chord and tempo changes, often interspersing plucky Zeppelin covers with Herbie Hancock-tinged solos.
Nick and Jessica probably won't be in the house, but this gig promises more variety and entertainment than those two are capable of until their night-vision Internet debut. (Joshua Valocchi)
