The Renaissance
Sun., Aug. 15, 8pm. $5 (ladies free). Balcony, 1003 Arch St. 215.922.LIVE. www.thetroc.com
Touching on just about every major facet of hip-hop culture, Sunday's aptly named Renaissance party offers a chance for old-school heads and backpackers alike to mingle in a laid-back environment free of any underlying animosity.
The night--billed as a hip-hop variety show--will feature everything from DJs and a live funk band to graffiti and tattoo artistry. Keepin' the heads bobbin' behind the decks will be Mikematic, who'll set the tone with his hip-hop and funk stylings.
Joining Mike on the wheels will be down-tempo maestro Reggie Carter and Grand Wizzard Uncle Jesse, whose unique sonic journeys should keep things interesting, to say the least.
Paintings from tattoo artist Mike Moses will be on display along-side works by graf artist Mensch. Inker Fred Pinckard joins the fray, showcasing selections from his line of traditional Japanese paintings.
Seems like the only thing missing from the lineup is a B-boy (and -girl) showcase--so if you think you have the skills to pay the bills, grab a flattened cardboard box on your way to Chinatown and get down with the movement. (Joshua Valocchi)
